The Grown Clean Organic City Opportunity Score is an educational estimate based on publicly
available information. It measures access to organic and lower-pesticide opportunities, not
the overall health or safety of a city. Information may be incomplete or change over time.
Methodology & limitations
The Organic City Opportunity Score is a beta, educational estimate of how accessible
organic, lower-pesticide, and sustainability-related food opportunities are in a city.
It is not a measurement of a city's overall health, safety, or quality of life.
Categories and weights
Organic Grocery Access — 25 points
Farmers Markets and Local Food — 20 points
Organic Dining Opportunities — 15 points
Lower-Pesticide Public Practices — 15 points
Community Gardens and Urban Agriculture — 10 points
Education and Community Initiatives — 10 points
Affordability and Inclusivity — 5 points
How sources are selected
Researchers prioritize official city and government sources, USDA and certified-organic
directories, established farmers-market directories, verifiable business websites, and
recognized nonprofit sources. Vague marketing language such as "natural," "clean," or
"healthy" is not treated as evidence of certified organic status.
How city size is considered
Scores weigh the number of organic options against the city's population and geographic
size, so a large city is not automatically rewarded just for having more businesses, and a
small city is not automatically penalized for having fewer.
How missing information affects scoring
When information about a category cannot be confirmed, that category is scored
conservatively and the explanation says so directly. Grown Clean does not assign a precise
score based on assumptions or guesses.
Reporting missing or incorrect information
Use the "Request this city" form for cities that haven't been evaluated, or the "Report
incorrect information" link to flag anything that looks outdated or wrong. Every report is
reviewed by a person before a score changes.
